SUFFERING AND SPIRITUALITY? A GROUP DISCUSION BELONGING TO 1311 NOT 2011 - PLUS A NOTE ON THE HOPELESSNESS OF HAITI

POSTED RESPONSE TO AN EDITORIAL GROUP DISCUSSION IN TORONTO'S GLOBE AND MAIL

Suffering and spirituality?

May I remind the editors that this is 2011, not 1311.

This lame-brain idea of a discussion is a throwback to Catholic official mutterings after events like the Black Death.

Suffering on that scale means only one thing: there is no meaning whatsoever in nature's endless creation and destruction. It just is.

To the reader concerned with aid. The governments of the world are very reluctant to hand over billions to the kind of corrupt and incompetent government Haiti has.

It is more likely to end up in Swiss bank accounts than in building anything.

During the height of the crisis, Haiti's government was absolutely no help whatsoever, and many of the problems confronting immediate aid-providers were the fault of terrible government.

There is no law and order: the mass rapes of Haitian women following the horror just added another horror to the story.

What can the world do about such a hopeless place? Take over and run the country for the next decade? Not likely in view of all the wars the U.S. is engaged in.

If anyone has a suggestion of what truly can be done, please post it.
