JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: THE POINTLESSNESS OF FOLLOWING TRUMP'S "TWEETS" - LIKE KEEPING AN EAR TO THE GROUND NEAR A CATTLE RANCH

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE BY JOHN NAUGHTON IN THE GUARDIAN

Twitter, Trump and the distortion of the public sphere
"And yet, as a result of Trump’s retweeting, millions of people probably think that Britain First is a power in the land.'

Well, that statement is almost as ridiculous as some of Trump's tweets.

It is completely unwarranted.

Paying close attention to the noises of "social media" is itself hazardous and unhelpful.

A bit like keeping your ear to the ground near a cattle ranch.

Every mindless opinion, every twisted desire has always been out there somewhere in the mass of humanity. None of it is new. None of it is remarkable. And certainly, none of it is newsworthy.

The Internet only records a lot of it for others to read, but it is mostly just passing noise like the hooves of cattle, fads like hemlines, and superstitions like ghosts.
