Dmitry Orlov can be funny, and sometimes, he is genuinely insightful in his observations.
But in this piece, neither of those qualities is on display.
This is junk "ethno-science" trying to seem plausible. It is flirting with fascism.
Just unacceptable.
NOTE:
The publication "Russia Insider" has one of the most generous reader-comment policies on the Internet. It allows hard-hitting comments to go uncensored. That's something I respect.
And I think its policy in publishing articles is not dissimilar. It carries a wide range of articles from serious ones on world affairs to interesting historical anecdotes and to offbeat and amusing items, with the odd questionable one, as this one I've commented on.
It does a great job at finding fascinating photos, as of beautiful old monasteries and isolated villages in Russia or of color images of everyday life in the Soviet Union.
Those are the reasons I keep looking at it despite some articles I reject.
