JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: THE POPULIST RIGHT IN EUROPE - WHAT IS IT ACTUALLY THAT THE PRESS IS FEARFUL OF? - ECHOES OF THIS TITANIC AMERICAN ELECTION

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE BY OWEN JONES IN THE GUARDIAN

"Are we to be fearful of a slide to the populist right because we are concerned about the right-wing nature of the policies, or because they are populist?"

That is an excellent observation from a reader below.

Considering Owen Jones' record and that of the paper for which he writes, I suggest strongly that it is the latter, "because they are populist."

The establishment - and that very much includes a portion of prominent publishers, columnists, and politicians who claim allegiance to what I regard as a kind of faux liberalism - is afraid of nothing so much as genuine democracy, genuine popular expression.

After all, their entrenched power and authority can be blotted out in a vote.

That is, after all, what the whole titanic election battle in the U.S. is about and what the year-long assault on Jeremy Corbyn was about and what the endless attacks on Brexit are about.
