JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: THE TWO THINGS DEFINITELY TO AVOID AT THE NATO SUMMIT ARE THE VERY TWO THINGS THE UNITED STATES IS PRESSURING EVERYONE TO DO - BANNING HUAWEI AND SPENDING MORE ON THE MILITARY - BOTH RESEMBLE PIECES OF ADVICE FROM A DRUNKEN SAILOR

“NATO summit expected to put Canada under pressure on multiple fronts

“The U.S. wants allies to ban Huawei and boost military spending”

Banning Huawei and substantially boosting military spending are both truly anti-productive and wasteful ideas.

Show us a bit of leadership here, Prime Minister Trudeau. It really would be a nice change.

Huawei is great technology and a large number of countries have adopted it, including some of Europe, despite American pressure. It is a technology that makes a real difference in the speed and amount of information travelling the Internet.

Russia has a huge national program with Huawei. Please, does anyone in his or her right mind believe Putin isn't intensely concerned with security?

As far as military spending goes, almost nothing a nation can do is more wasteful and unproductive than increasing it.

The United States of course wants to sell its weapons systems, and it uses NATO as a "company store" in which to do that.

It wants costly technical failures like the F-35 subsidized by its allies.
