JERRY FALWELL, ANDREW MCKIE, AND FASCISM

POSTED RESPONSE TO A COLUMN BY THE DAILY TELEGRAPH'S ANDREW MCKIE

A RIDICULOUS COLUMN

Andrew, with which of Falwell's beliefs do you agree?

That Anti-Christ would come in the form of a Jew and was probably alive today somewhere? He actually said that.

That 9/11 was the result of homosexuality in America? He actually said that.

That the harmless teletubbies were promoting homosexuality? He said that, too.

That the poor suicide, Vince Foster, was somehow part of a dark White House plot? He not only said that, he sold tapes to make a fast buck out of it. Imagine the pain he caused the family?

That the prophet of Islam was a violent, dangerous figure? He said that while admitting he had read little genuine history on the subject.

These are just some of the ugly, destructive, thoughtless things this man said, apart from his insulting Bishop Tutu, a man who commands the respect and affection of millions.

To my mind, on this subject, you and Damian Thompson come mighty close to promoting hate, for it is difficult to see much else in this grotesque man but the hatred he manipulated to make his fortune.

I correct myself. There was a loving side, his love of money. He had perfected the techniques of squeezing every possible cent from the pockets of lonely, unhappy people with his computerized lists and programs to solicit money. And just so his sales of weird tapes.

He was a dangerous, unpleasant man whose oily personality and big smile were reserved for those and only those who fit his nasty prejudices and fed his immense appetites.

And what else is fascism?
