“But is there a silver-lining?
“I think so. I think Israel is showing its true colors.”
Does that mean that when soldiers, kneeling behind a fence, kill 300 unarmed civilians demonstrating for basic rights, Israel is not showing its true colors?
Or that the truly desperate situation in that concentration camp called Gaza does not show Israel’s true colors?
Israel’s “true colors” are there, brutally on display, week-in, week-out for all to read about and even see, but it makes no difference. None.
When power is great enough, and it is willing to be brutal enough, it gets away with pretty much whatever it wants.
Just look at the United States, Israel’s sponsor. It is killing in a dozen countries. It openly tries to overturn democratic government. It assassinates people on an industrial scale.
Do we hear huge objections? Indeed, except for small independent voices, do we hear any objections?
Not at all.
The same United States has emasculated or intimidated all kinds of international organizations from the UN and WTO to the ICC and OPCW.
There are no effective international forums from which critics can speak.
Heads of prestigious universities and churches say not a word.
The Western press? Corporate. Totally upholding American and Israeli atrocities.
Evil simply seems to be winning everywhere in the West. There is no silver lining.
The West that gave us over long centuries all the values and principles of human and democratic rights, but it is as though they have all been blown away like dust on the wind.
