POSTED RESPONSE TO A COLUMN BY THE DAILY TELEGRAPH'S CHRISTOPHER HOWSE
This is a real problem in many parts of the world. Many beautiful and interesting churches have been closed or torn down in North America.
The great churches and cathedrals represent a time in society when faith was largely unquestioned and affection made the necessary funds flow.
Also, in many jurisdictions, perhaps all, tithes of some form were a legal obligation.
The great churches represent also times when craftsmen worked for comparatively small wages. Replacing that level of skill today in any building would cost vast amounts.
So all the historical conditions for these great structures have changed, likely forever.
Government support may indeed be needed, although doesn't that, too, contain a problem just as that coming with turnstiles? Pilate paying the Temple's bills, so to speak?
