ARE THE OLYMPIC TORCH PROTESTS JUSTIFIED?

POSTED RESPONSE TO A COLUMN IN THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

The practice of carrying the Olympic Torch from Greece to the other side of the planet, involving as it does elaborate and costly arrangements, is just silly.

It’s pure Book of Records or American Midwestern College fraternity stuff.

It ought to be snuffed out permanently for being costly and meaningless.

But as long as the silly business continues, it naturally attracts protesters.

And the protesters have every right to object in a free country.

I happen to think them wrong because there is no connection between an event like the Olympics and the host’s politics.

After all, the Olympics were not stopped in 1936 with Hitler putting them on.

And that allowed one of the greatest figures of modern sports history to shine. Jesse Owens cast a giant shadow over all the crackpot NAZI theories with his performance.

Anyway, today the bloodiest, most oppressive nation on earth is the United States, without question.

If you're going to protest, protest against the people who've bombed millions to the grave in recent decades.
