CALGARY ON THE EDGE OF GREATNESS IN THE ARTS?

POSTED RESPONSE TO A COLUMN IN THE TORONTO GLOBE AND MAIL

I do think this exaggerates considerably, bordering on dreaming, actually.

While I have not been to Calgary in a while, I made many trips there as part of the oil industry.

"Greatness in the arts" was absurdly far from characterizing this dull, fairly ugly, and pretty boring town.

It's a collection of cheap office towers built in undistinguished streets and suburbs sprawling off into the dry dustiness.

The chief night life was girls - and they were young for the most part - standing on the corner boldly soliciting men.

The main streets were empty of other life at 6 PM, much like many small U.S. cities.

Yes, the museum was nice, but what an insignificant part of the city it was.
