JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: OBSESSION WITH SKIN BLEACHING - LIGHTNESS HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN OBSESSION IN BLACK COMMUNITIES

The Might of 'White': How our obsession with whiter skin became dangerous

Sorry, but black societies have always behaved this way.

In Haiti, for example, there are recognized tiers of society with the lightest skinned living up on the hill.

In the US, decades ago, there was a common saying in the black community, "If you light, you alright. If you brown, you can hang around. But if you black, stand back"

Skin lighteners and hair straighteners have always sold well. In the 1930s or 40s, they were practically indispensable for ambitious blacks.

But even in the 1980s, we have the phenomenon of Michael Jackson.

In parts of Africa today, a black baby born as an albino is treated very bizarrely. Albino adults are hunted down sometimes to be cut up and eaten for their "magic."
