JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: SOME THOUGHTS ON THE GUARDIAN'S NEW LOOK AND TABLOID FORMAT

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE IN THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian's new look: readers and rivals respond

Of course, tabloid means nothing on the Internet, but in the world of newspapers in North America, it always used to connote down-market, more pop-oriented journalism.

Some might suggest The Guardian had already moved significantly in this direction without a change in sizing.

But with changing cost structures, many old-line papers have gone that way for some savings in paper and handling.

One really expects, before too long, paper editions to disappear altogether.

The photo of the paper edition actually looks much better on the portion some call the masthead.

The Internet edition has black letters on light blue background, about as unprepossessing a color combination as you could come up with.

My second "appearance" suggestion on the Internet edition is banning that photo of Ms. Viner that gets used so often. It glows like an image painted on the sides of an old circus wagon.
