JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: A WRITER CLAIMS NUCLEAR DETERRENCE IS A MYTH - WHY I THINK HE IS WRONG ALTHOUGH I WISH I COULD AGREE

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE BY DAVID BARASH IN THE GUARDIAN

Nuclear deterrence is a myth. And a lethal one at that
Nuclear deterrence continues to dominate international relations. Yet there is no proof it ever worked, nor that it ever will

I wish I could agree.

But I do think the author is shouting to be heard against a hurricane.

I think it indisputable that were Russia not a nuclear power, the United States would have overrun it in recent decades.

The United States has tried many dirty tricks - from the coup in Ukraine to assistance to the Chechens years ago - to hurt and destabilize Russia.

But the fact that Russia remains the only country on earth which can literally obliterate the United States gave it security from much larger and more open attempts.

Today's America wouldn't hesitate to march in.

Just look at the Obama-Trump huge run-up against the border in violation of all agreements between America and the USSR from the time of Reagan.

And we should all be glad for great powers like Russia and China led by reasonable men. Without them, the Neocon insanity that has taken hold of America could become more of a threat to all of us.

As we've seen so clearly at the UN in recent years, the United States has utter contempt for international rule of law as represented by the UN.

It has expressed the same contempt in a dozen ways, from the induced horror in Syria to its lack of any effort to restrain the criminals who now rule Israel.
