JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: FORMER UN SECRETARY-GENERAL KOFI ANNAN DIES - SOME REFLECTIONS ON WHAT HAS HAPPENED WITH THE UN

John Chuckman

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE BY JOE LAURIA IN CONSORTIUM NEWS

“A Retrospective on Kofi Annan, Dead at 80”

Kofi Annan was the last UN Secretary-General with at least some of what I view as integrity.

We just do not hear the US being questioned or criticized anymore by the head of the world's peace organization, especially about its rampaging wars through the Middle East and threats and other aggression.

The US always punishes UN officials who do speak out.

The American Neocon Madeleine Albright won her State Department spurs in part through backroom manipulations and pressures applied to various states to rid the UN of a more forthright critic before Annan, Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

And of course, its recent actions of quitting some important UN agencies and cutting its financial support are quite intimidating.

Response to a comment that Annan was not quite the wonderful figure the article portrays him as:

I agree he was far from ideal, vis-a-vis American aggression and imperialism.

But he did speak to truth now and then.

We don't even have that limited effort now.

The US literally, through threats and harsh acts, has smothered the UN as a voice for the other 95% of humanity.
