JOHN CHUCKMAN COMMENT: HARD TO SEE ANY DIFFERENCE IN BURMA'S TREATMENT OF ROHINGYA PEOPLE AND ISRAEL'S TREATMENT OF THE PEOPLE OF GAZA - YET THE PRESS AND POLITICIANS WRING THEIR HANDS OFTEN OVER BURMA

John Chuckman

COMMENT POSTED TO AN ARTICLE IN THE INDEPENDENT

“Jeremy Hunt to visit Burma after 'deeply disturbing' UN report on crimes against Rohingya people

“'There must never be a hiding place for those who commit these kinds of atrocities,' foreign secretary says”

Quite literally, anything you can say about Burma’s appallingly brutal treatment of the Rohingya people, you can say also with complete honesty about Israel’s appallingly brutal treatment of the people of Gaza.

Yet, somehow, it never gets said.

What is it in our political and journalistic environment that encourages such selective concerns?

Simply the fact of the status of Burma compared to the status of Israel in the American imperial scheme of things. Nothing else. Not concern for humanity. Not concern for human rights. Not concern for decency.
